Top Men's Looks From AFI Fashion Week
Self-expression through fashion and playing around with different styles is just as much a masculine experience as it is a feminine one. Meaning that fashion week is not just for women. Men also get their fill of options and opportunities to creatively express their tastes.
This year African Fashion International’s (AFI) Joburg Fashion Week saw some masculine flames from 10- 12 October 2019. From the street style of influencers and spectators to the well-coordinated runways of Pan-African design houses. We found much to applaud. This is Afrophilia’s round-up of our favourite men’s looks from AFI Joburg Fashion Week.
Suits
Mai Atafo, Palse by Paledi Segapo, Masango and David Tlale presented distinctive ensembles.
Nigerian powerhouse Mai Atafo presented gunmetal grey three-piece suits that ooze refinement. His collarless one, in particular, has presented an intelligent way for men to enjoy the dapper three-piece under the resilient African sun. Palse’s beautiful flaming suits marry just the right hint of quirk and adventure, with tradition. Masango’s unique choice of print, paired with equally bold cut-outs make for a memorable suit. Which can only be fitting for a “stand out” personality. David Tlale delivered art.
Other Hot Looks
Masango, K Moraba & Collective, Taibo Bacar, Ellen Madie and Eric Raisina delivered other hot looks that stood out.
Masango delivered head-to-toe black and the sharp combination of beading and draping produced dramatic beauty. K Moraba & Collective’s monochromatic preference for the short has a tasteful, youthful edge. Taibo Bacar’s tropical print lends to a “cool, calm and collected” beach-ready swagger. Ellen Madie’s sharply constructed coat of grey with pale veins sits appealingly on whitewashed red pants. Eric Raisina’s warm and colourful casual, sports an adventurous bomber. Beneath it rests an unusual, richly woven golfer and is nothing short of being a statement. The subtle gold piping on the pant pocket lip is more testament to the designer’s sharp attention to detail. Each component of this ensemble could easily lend to a new and completely different look.
Winning Street Style
Next time you hear that AFI is delivering another fashion week, do not assume that it is just for women. You are bound to find something that speaks to you too.
